Hello.
I'm George.
I make videos, and write about sport and other things. I’m a sailor, a runner, and I love to hike. But really I will try any sport, and my interests include sportsmanship, obsession, coming-of-age, alcohol (or lack thereof), vegetarianism, ultimate frisbee, sports media, winning, losing, determinism, and much, much, more.
I am originally from Oxfordshire, England, and as a kid I sucked at sport. I was really bad. And not only was I bad at sport, but I wasn't interested in it either. Watching sport has never delighted me, and I didn't find the mainstream sports like football or cricket fun.
But I was always competitive, and as I got older and found myself outgrowing other competitive outlets (like fighting with my classmates), sports began to fill a growing void inside me. I have had several sporting loves, but my greatest has always been sailing, specifically a high niche format of sailing called 'Team Racing'.
As a teenager my competitiveness reached a fever pitch. I sailed as often as I could manage, and began to see some limited success: from winning minor regional competitions, to eventually coming second at the Schools National Championships for two years running. I committed myself to the University of Southampton (primarily for the sailing team) and redoubled my efforts to improve.
Through hard work and luck my team rose through the ranks to finish second at the British Universities Sailing Championships. But my relentless focus on sailing had come at a price: my grades were lackluster, and I had damaged several important relationships in my personal life. I needed a change.
Sailing less regularly improved my grades, but I found my body yearning for sport yet again. Fortunately, I soon met my second great sporting love: Running. Within weeks I was obsessed. I kept sailing, kept running, finished university, hiked 500 miles along the length of the Pyrenees mountains, fell in love with a girl, and got a graduate job in Bristol as a Trainee Patent Attorney, where I was determined to finally grow up.
Unfortunately, my legs had other ideas. My running became increasingly ambitious, turning from marathons to ultra-marathons, from flat road to vast mountains, constantly searching for seconds to shave off my PBs. And as the scope of my running potential widened, so did the scope of my life potential. I decided to chase the (American) girl I loved, quit my job, and was confronted with 3000 miles of Atlantic Ocean and a visa-less passport between me and her.
Sport has been the constant frame for my life over the past 10 years, everything a win, a loss, a challenge or a training session, and it was at this point in my journey that I began making videos to pass this frame on by teaching others to sail. I hope that the content I produce helps you to be more bold, more thoughtful, and more intentional, both on and off the metaphorical pitch.
In the two years since then, my life has still contained challenges. But sport has been a key part of choosing the right challenges to take on.
My next challenges are working out how to lead a meaningful career, moving to the USA with my now-wife once my visa is approved, and breaking 15:00 minutes in the 5k.
